Cut the free speech red tape at Regent University

Regent University’s Student Handbook states that “Regent University holds the right of expression as necessary as the right of inquiry and that both must be preserved as essential to the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge and truth” (8.3 Freedom of Expression). Despite this, Regent has policies that restrict the spontaneous speech of students and their clubs as well as social media policies that inhibit student expression.

Regent University’s Student Handbook requires all groups of students meeting together for a common purpose, whether on campus or off campus, to be reviewed and approved by the university administration in advance (Student Handbook policy 5.2.3.4). On top of speech and assembly, Regent University Administration should establish clear guidelines and expectations for students to follow rather than a vague precedent that Student organizations are functioning around.

I affirm that prior permission policies such as these inhibit student speech and interfere with the operation and success of student activities and their groups. I petition Executive Vice President for Student Life Joseph Umidi to revise Regent University’s policies to create an environment more friendly to spontaneous student activity and pursuit of truth.
