Make Housing Voluntary at Texas State University

We, the undersigned, urge Texas State University to make on-campus housing voluntary for all students, allowing them the freedom to choose where they live during their time at the university. The cost of dorms at Texas State University is significantly higher than many off-campus options available to students. In San Marcos, students can find more affordable housing that better fits their financial situations, yet the current policy forces them to pay a premium for on-campus living. This mandatory requirement places an unnecessary financial burden on students already struggling with tuition and other essential expenses.

Personal choice is a fundamental right, and students should have the autonomy to decide where they live based on their individual needs and circumstances. Mandatory on-campus housing does not account for the diverse needs of the student body, including those who may find off-campus options more suitable and cost-effective. By making housing voluntary, Texas State University would empower students to make decisions that best support their financial well-being and personal preferences.

We call on President Kelly Damphousse to reconsider the current policy and make on-campus housing voluntary. This change would reflect the university’s commitment to supporting student choice and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive both academically and financially.
