Petition to Protect Free Speech at Kennesaw State University

We, the undersigned students, faculty, and supporters of Kennesaw State University, call on the administration to protect and promote free speech on our campus. In a time of deep national division, the ability to express diverse viewpoints and engage in open dialogue is essential for fostering understanding and unity.

On August 14 and 15, 2024, our fellow activists were unjustly silenced while exercising their constitutionally protected right to free speech. They were told that to speak freely, they must first seek permission from the administration—an affront to their rights and the principles of academic freedom. Additionally, we were informed that free speech must be limited to ensure students “connect in ways that make sense.” This vague justification is not only insulting but fundamentally flawed. True connection arises from the free exchange of ideas, not from controlled speech.

We demand that Kennesaw State University abolish all “free speech zones” and extend the right to free speech to all public outdoor spaces on campus. Restricting free speech to specific areas undermines our First Amendment rights. By eliminating these zones, KSU will affirm its commitment to the Constitution and empower its students to engage in meaningful dialogue, crucial for bridging societal divides.

President Kathy Schwaig, we urge you to lead by example and uphold the values of our university by supporting this cause. Your commitment will empower students to use their voices for positive change and uphold the core principles of our academic community.
