Chapter President Frank Smith knew that there were unconstitutional speech codes on his campus at JMU. Smith contacted YAL’s Director of Free Speech to see what could be done to change the policies. Smith decided to hold two events to protest the policy and gain support for a change. After completing both events without any trouble from the administration, Smith reached out to a faculty member that he knew was friendly to free speech.
Through consistent contact with his school administration and connection with FIRE, Smith was able to push the school to adopt more constitutional guidelines for student involvement on campus. After graduation in May 2019, Smith handed the chapter to new president Duncan Demarsh, who will hold the school accountable to implementing the newly adopted policies.
