In February 2020, students at Towson University in Maryland were informed that their school had speech policies requiring all students to get advance permission before assembling on campus. That month, YAL member C.J. Whitlock held a free speech ball event with members of YAL’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Leadership Team.
One month later, in March, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) produced a demand letter on behalf of the Towson YAL students informing the school that their policies did not line up with the University’s responsibility to protect its students’ right to free speech. Through this contact, Towson began revising its free speech policies. After consistent follow up by ADF and YAL’s Free Speech Director, Towson removed its unconstitutional prior restraints on free speech.
