Story:

Norwalk Community College in Norwalk, CT had a solicitation policy that prohibited students from speaking or assembling on campus without going to the student life office to “sign-in.” These permit and sign-in policies were often used by campuses to limit speech to which administrators don’t take kindly.

YAL Chapter President, Amy Ozols, and YAL’s Connecticut State Chair Michelle Brodsky worked to secure a meeting with the school in order to discuss the problematic policies. Though the meeting was secured in 2019, no significant change was implemented at the time. In Spring of 2020, however, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) sent a letter to Norwalk Community College to reinforce the YAL students’ claims that the policies were unconstitutional. ADF and NCC continued talks throughout 2020, and in December 2020, ADF confirmed that the school had removed its troublesome policy, marking the Fight for Free Speech’s thirteenth victory of the year.
