Josh Metzel, a determined student at Colorado School of Mines, took on the challenge of confronting a mandatory meal plan imposed by the administration. Undeterred, he immediately sprang into action, meticulously researching the policy and rallying his fellow chapter members to join the cause.
With unwavering commitment, Josh tirelessly manned the tables day after day, igniting a spark of momentum that soon turned into a blazing fire of student activism. Together with his chapter, he successfully amassed an impressive 504 signatures in support of making the meal plan voluntary.
Entering a crucial meeting with the administration, Josh was confronted with the revelation that the mandatory meal plan was a result of a contractual obligation with the meal provider. Undaunted, he collaborated with the Student Rights Campaign (SRC) to draft a revised meal plan policy that would address both the contractual requirements and the students’ desires.
After a series of strategic meetings and negotiations, Josh and the SRC presented their proposal to the administration. Their hard work and dedication paid off when the administration agreed to put the amendment up for a vote by the board of trustees.
On May 3rd, the board voted in favor of making the meal plan voluntary, marking a significant victory for student rights at Colorado School of Mines. This historic achievement not only liberated students from an unjust policy but also established a precedent for future SRC initiatives, showcasing the power of grassroots activism in effecting real change.
